The film adaptation of John Irving's novel "The Cider House Rules" was originally planned with the author himself writing the screenplay on the condition that his son, Colin Irving, would play the role of Wally Worthington. However, due to budget constraints, the production took over a decade to complete, causing Colin to outgrow the role by the time filming began in 1999. Ultimately, he was cast as a young American army lieutenant who delivers news about Wally to his family. John Irving also had a cameo in the film. Initially, director Phillip Borsos was hired to oversee the project, but tragically passed away before funding could be secured. Michael Winterbottom was then approached to take his place, but declined upon learning of the extensive production timeline. Finally, Lasse Hallström was chosen to direct the film, bringing the long-awaited adaptation to life.
